Wendell is a town in Wake County, North Carolina United States. It is a satellite town of Raleigh, the state capital. The population was 5,845 at the 2010 census. Wendell is located in the northeast central region of North Carolina, where the North American Piedmont and Atlantic Coastal Plain regions meet. This area is known as the "fall line" because it marks the elevation inland at which waterfalls begin to appear in creeks and rivers. Its central Piedmont location situates Wendell about three hours by car west of Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, and four hours east of the Great Smoky Mountains. Wendell has four buildings and one district that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Dr. Thomas H. Avera House, Harmony Plantation, Riley Hill School, Sunnyside, and the Wendell Commercial Historic District.
